In 410 AD, the Roman Empire withdrew its legions from Britain, leaving the native Romano-British population vulnerable to raids from the northern Picts and Scots. According to early historians like Bede and Gildas, a British ruler named Vortigern invited Germanic mercenaries to protect the land.
